Our Story

Design for development

Tikau is a Finnish company combining design with the vision of employing and empowering artisans. “Tikau" means long-lasting and durable in Hindi. We know who made our products and where are they made in. The production is mainly based in India and Finland. Some of the products are also manufactured in other parts of the world always according to the principle of sustainable development.

Our products are not factory-made but manufactured by individual artisans and small-scale producers in their homes or in small communities. Taking a uniquely long-term, personal and humane approach, Tikau collaborates directly with its artisans, combining contemporary design and traditional craftsmanship. We use local, organic materials for each product and minimize the use of chemicals and water.

Alternative to mass-production

Tikau’s product range is a socially and environmentally conscious collection of exclusive hand made items made in cooperation with small producers. Our vision of luxury is clean home and clean world, organic materials, zero plastic and pure, chemical-free products. Our products also have identifiable origins. We are an alternative to mass production, as each of our products are combination of quality, top-class design and the principles of sustainable development.

Tikau has been working for responsible textiles since 2008 and we are committed to continuous improvement. We want to continue working as an alternative to mass production together with other responsible operators in the field and with our customers. We are constantly developing our methods of operation as we are interested in the world around us and the opportunities with which we can further develop our environmentally friendly and socially impactful work.

Person behind Tikau

Founder of Tikau, Taina Snellman-Langenskiöld, is a design professional who has been working extensively in marketing and corporate social responsibility within the design and fashion industry. Tikau was established in 2008 and has since been a pioneer in responsible design thinking.

Taina is willing to influence societal challenges of sustainable development. He has also lectured extensively on the subject and curated exhibitions and content related to more responsible and helpful design in Finland and internationally. Taina is also the creative director in Billnäs Gård, a hotel and event space that focuses on the well-being of nature and people, set to open summer 2023.

Taina loves old houses, animals and country life. She prefers to spend her free time with animals, gardening and interior design projects. Taina is inspired by everything beautiful around her: nature, design, art and buildings.

Taina leads Tikau with heart and passion, together with passionate Tikau team members and co-workers.
